FIFTY YEARS WITH COLLEGE

MR A. E. FLOWER’S RECORD Mr A. E. Flower’s continuous association for 50 years with Canterbury University College was marked by the Graduates’ Association at an “At Home” given in honour of Mr and Mrs Flower in the Students’ Union •building on Saturday evening. On the arrival of the guests of honour, who were accompanied by the patron of the association (Dr. J. Right) and Mrs Hight, Mrs E. Hamber presented a floral spray to Mrs Flower. In his opening remarks, the president of the Graduates’ Association (Mr J. E. Purchase) referred to Mr Flower’s distinguished contributions to education in many directions. The Rector (Professor A. H. Tocker) traced Mr Flower’s career through the college and his subsequent work for the college on its governing bodies. A presentation of books from the association was made to Mr Flower by Dr. Right. Mr W. C. Colee spoke for the college council.

Messages of congratulation were received from the Chancellor of the University of New Zealand (the Hon. J. A.« Hanan) and Mr H. F. von Haast, a former pro-chancellor. Mr Flower entered Canterbury University College as a student in 1893, taking his Master of Arts degree with honours in mathematics, and later his Master Of Science degree. He represented the college at football, athletics, and tennis. For .more than 15 years Mr Flower was president of the Students’ Union; In 1916 he was appointed to the Board of Governors, becoming chairman of the college council in 1938. Mr Flower became a member of the University Senate in 1925, and for a period he was president of the Canterbury University College Graduates’ Association.
