NON-STOP RIDE
CYCLIST’S ATTEMPT CHRISTCHURCH TO INVERCARGILL A Southland amateur cyclist, H. M. Hubber, left Christchurch at 4 p.m. yesterday for Invercargill in an attempt to ride the distance—which is 365 miles —non-stop. It is an official attempt controlled by the New Zealand Cycling Federation. , J , A small crowd gathered in Cathedral square to see the start of the'ride. The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr E. H. Andrews) gave the rider a letter to the Mayor of ..Invercargill, and wished him good luck. About eight years ago L. Fleming, of Christchurch, did the journey from •Christchurch to Dunedin in 14 hours 29 minutes. . In 1935 a road race from Invercargill to Dunedin was held, and J. L. Richards (Christchurch), who won the race, secured fastest time in 6 hours 43 minutes. These two times, together give a total of 21 hours 12 minutes. If Hubber reaches Invercargill at 1 p.m; to-day he will have accomplished the journey in 21 hours,, and this.will be a remarkably good performance; as he will have beaten the combined! times of .two men who each did only part of the journey. , Arrangements have been made for Hubber to have food on the journey* without stoppings Christchurch amateur cycling officials .w'ill’ aecbmpaiiy him .to the Eangitata, Timaru officials' will accompany him from the Rangifata to the Waitaki, Oamaru officials •from, the Waitaki to Palmerston South and Invercargill officials from Palmerston to, .Invercargill. The. ride is being made under the auspices of the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club.
