NOVELS OF WAR ONLY THE WHITE CLOUD Signed with Their Hononr. By James Aldridge. Wyatt and Watts Pty. Ltd., Melbourne. 299 pp. (10/6.) A young Australian war correspondent, the author has made remarkably good dramatic use of his eye-witness experience. The background of this novel is the Middle East campaign, especially that of the war in the air, from the early days when Britain’s air power was assented bv a handful of Gladiators, until the Hurricanes came in. (“There were three at first.”) Much of the action is linked with the gallant, hopeless expedition to Greece; and there the love story of the pilot hero, John Quayle, begins to move on its heart-lifting, heart-breaking course to the end—“only the white cloud in the blue sky.” INVASION A Song far the Angels. By F. L. Green. Michael Joseph Ltd. 226 pp. Through Whlfcombe and Tombs Ltd. Mr Green, whose early novels were very good thrillers, has become deeper ‘and subtler without losing the gift of moving his readers to excitement and suspense. This story, in which the temperamental clash of two smalltown leaders is protracted into the days when their town is threatened by the Nazi invader and the security of the people depends on their swift and concerted action, is an excellent example of his dual quality.
