GREYMOUTH HARBOUR
Sir,—l was interested in the Hon. J. O’Brien’s statement that something would have to be done to prevent shoaling of Greymouth’s harbour. It must be apparent to anyone who knows Greymouth that. with the removal of forest and consolidation of land, that flooding of Greymouth will be greater in the future than in the past. Might I suggest that to remove the shingle menace and convert it into an asset a dragline be placed in the river above Cobden bridge. Instead of allowing the shingle to enter; the harbour, raise the level of the sea bed and prevent ships entering the harbour, we should use this shingle to raise the low-lying part of Greymouth to prevent flooding. Conditions are so favourable for removing this shingle that it would Tje.cheaper to reclaim land to build a better Greymouth than to buy it.—Yours, etc.. OBSERVER. October 8. 1943.
