MEAT FAMINE IN SYDNEY
STRIKE AT CITY ABATTOIRS
(Bee. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. VL Sydney’s meat famine will continue . next week. The workers on strike at the Homebush abattoirs have unexpectly rejected a settlement proposal. , - 1 The Federal Minister of Labour (the , Hon. E. S. Holloway) will arrive in Sydney on Monday to make an at* tempt to settle, the strike. . ■>? The effect of the strike is being felt . by the whole civilian population of Sydney. A little meat was available 1 yesterday for housewives, who lined - up in queues for their week-end sup* plies. Most smallgoods shops were un* ; able to cope jvith the big demand for - poultry, eggs, and tinned meats. Customers complained bitterly about - excessive prices. One shopper was • offered a hindquarter of mutton for 19s : 6d. Small uncooked fowls were priced , up to 10s 6d. The continuation of the strike means .. that shops will have to rely on supplies from country killing centres—about 55 per cent, of the normal. An attempt may be made by th* strikers to cut off or restrict country supplies to the metropolitan area.
