AIR FORCE' AEROPLANES HELP IN SEARCH
From Our Own Reporter
TIMARU, September 12. The assistance of the Royal New Zealand Air Force was engaged today in the search for the launch Muriel, owned by Mr Percival G. Knowles, of Timaru, which had been missing overnight. Four aeroplanes were dispatched from • an Air Force station, and the Muriel was found about 3.30 this afternoon. The occupants, including Mr Knowles, were none the worse for their experience. Launches were sent out from the Timaru harbour, and the boat was towed home.
After fishing operations on Saturday at the winter ground between a point offshore from Waimate and the mouth of .the Waitaki river, the boat left about 12.30 p.m. on its return to Timaru. It ran into thick fog, and speed was reduced, but subsequently a leak was discovered in the fuel-line. The vessel was brought towards the shore about 4 p.m. to ascertain its bearings. When there was very little oil left the boat was anchored offshore from St. Andrews. The navigation lights were left burning all night in the Hope that they would be seen from land, and the predicament of the fishermen discovered.
