COUNCIL OF AMATEUR SPORT

MEETING OF DELEGATES Appreciation of the prompt action of the Minister of Broadcasting (the Hon. D. Wilson), in reinstating the junior sports session broadcast from 3ZB at 6.45 on Friday evenings was expressed at a meeting of the Canterbury Council of Amateur Sport, held on Wednesday evening. The council had written to the Minister protesting against the deletion of this feature from the station’! ; programme. Mr A. R; Blank moved that the council should write again to Wellington, ; requesting that the council’s previous ' suggestion of having more time allotted to sport by the YA station should ’ receive further consideration. His motion was carried. The clashing of dates for representa- ' tive sports fixtures in the winter was discussed at the meeting. Mr Blank suggested that a conference of delegates should be held at the beginning . of the winter snorts season to fix the dates for matches during the season. A letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. W. E. Parry), suggesting that the question, of a journal of sport for school chil- \ dren in Canterbury be deferred until after the conference convened for the purpose of setting up a Dominion council of sport. It was felt by the members of the council that, as the proposal originated in Canterbury, the work on the magazine should be proceeded with. A deputation from the Primary Schools’ Athletic Association, headed by Mr C. W. Allard, protested against ■ a suggestion made at a previous meetin • of the council to introduce professional sports coaches into the schools. “It has been stated," said Mr Allard, "that teachers are neither competent nor willing to teach sport in schools. Our experience over the last 40 years does not bear this out.” Mr Blank, who had originally brought the matter up. said that ha' had not intended to belittle the work at present being done by primary school teachers: tut there was mora work for sports coaches than the present staffs could cope with. The discussion finished on an amicable note, Mr Allard thanking the council for their interest in sport in the schools,, and promising his association's support of the council’s work.
