Miss M. G. Havelaar, Mesdames W, MacKay, W. H. Cattell, J. Lorimer, G, H. Watts, R. D. Neale, and Clive Crowley will attend the Dominion conference of the National Council of Women to be held in Wellington from September 7 till September 10. Miss Mary McLean, who was chosen as a delegate from the local branch, will be unable to attend the conference. A few weeks ago, at the request of the Christchurch branch of the Red Cross Society, the lady editor of “The Press” appealed for gifts of mahjongg sets, or the loan of them, for the entertainment of returned servicemen at the Burwood Hospital. Yesterday Mrs Herbert Smith, who is in charge of the Red Cross depot, reported that she had received a loan of a very good set, and, after trying in vain to buy a set in the usual way, she had attended an auction sale and had bought a high class set in good order. She has already received a substantial donation towards the cost from an anonymous friend. She and the lady editor are grateful for the generous response to their appeal. Sister E. A. Greenwood, who has been in charge of the nurses’ home at Waikato Hospital io r 14 years, has resigned from the staff of the hospital. News of the capture of Bronte by the Bth Army in the course of the Sicilian campaign serves as a reminder that if is 144 years this month since the dukedom of Bronte was conferred on Lord Nelson. Nelson played a prominent part in assisting Ferdinand IV ol Naples in repressing a rebellion in his kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The dukedom, with a small estate near Bronte, was the reward for Nelson’s services. Mr§ May Denny, the first welfare officer for the Maori people in the South Island, haS arrived in Christchurch from her former home in Dunedin Mrs Denny, who is a qualified nurse, comes from Bruce Bay, South Westland. It is expected that Mrs Denny will visit the North Island and acquaint herself with the situation there before she begins her work in the South Island, where she will be in contact with all the Maori communities. The Red Cross Society would be grateful for gifts of 12oz medicine bottles which are in short supply, and for small pieces of fur for use in occupational work at hospitals. Gifts, no matter how small, will be gratefully received at the Red Cross depot, 105 Cashel street. At a meeting of representatives of the sub-centres of the Red Cross Society, held at the society’s office, Cashel street yesterday morning, plans were discussed for the celebration of the twenty-first birthday of the Junior Red Cross. Sub-committees were formed to arrange for the billeting of country children coming to Christchurch for the week-end, and for catering and providing entertainment for those who are expected to take part in the celebrations. On September 18, a grand paiade, in which it is expected 120 C children will take part, will be held in the city. On September 19, the golden jubilee of the granting of the franchise to women will be celebrated* throughout New Zealand. At a meeting of representatives of Dominion-wide women’s organisations, just held in Christchurch, it was decided that, in common with what is being done in other centres, a thanksgiving service should be held in the Civic Theatre on the afternoon of Sunday. September 19. This service will be conducted entirely by women and amongst the speakers will be Miss C. Henderson. On the following day, at a public meeting, citizens will hear resolutions framed for the occasion by the committee in Wellington, and will be asked to endorse them All women who took advantage of the franchise and voted at the first election after the granting of the franchise, are asked to send their names and addresses to Mrs W. MacKay. 77 Weston road. At the last meeting of the Kirwee sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, the resignation of the president, Mrs F. Johnson, was accepted with much regret. The election of a new president was held over till next meeting. II was reported that £3 had been given to the Chines Red Cross funds and £3 to the Turkish Red Crescent.
