SCHOLARSHIPS AT WAITAKI
CHRISTCHURCH OLD BOY’S PROPOSAL A recommendation, sponsored by the president (Captain R. H. Hill, of Christchurch), that the executive council should consider the establishment at the school of scholarships for the sons of old boys, and make recommendations to branches, was made at the annual meeting of the Waitaki High School Old Boys’ Association. Captain Hill advocated that the executive council should be empowered to go ahead with a scheme, and circulate proposals with a view to establishing scholarships for the "sons of old boys at the school. He said that if one could be obtained from each island it would not be too much to ask. He had contemplated a grouping of the provinces so that four scholarships could be provided. If adopted the scheme would allow the sons of old boys, who otherwise might not be able to do so, to attend the school, and give the oppor- . tunity to every old boy’s son to attend the school as a boarder for two years, ; It would m6an a cost of about £2OO, J or £IOO a year. Provision was also en- : visaged for Oamaru. so that a widow could send her son to the school, and provide clothing, books, etc. “We have never had any scholarships at the school, although other schools of similar status have them, and in that respect we are sadly lacking,” concluded Captain Hill.
