GIFTS OF TREES FOR RATEPAYERS

— WAIREWA COUNTY COUNCIL’S DECISION The Wairewa County Council, at a recent meeting, decided to supply trees free of cost to any ratepayer who was willing to plant them. The chairman (Mr F. Coop) said the council should encourage ratepayers to plant trees as it had done in past years, as these trees would be a valuable asset in the future. Cr. G. W. Thompson said several ratepayers had approached him about trees being made available for planting, and he said at least 1000 trees would be applied for in his district. The council decided to supply 100 macrocarpa, 100 pinus insignis, or 50 Lawsoniana trees to any ratepayer who applied for them. An application from the Canterbury Progress League for support by way of an annual grant was favourably considered, and it was decided to renew last year’s grant of £ls. , The chairman reported that he had inspected a quarry at Birdling’s Flat with Mr Renner, county engineer. They thought it would probably be cheaper to purchase metal for repairing the highway at Birdling’s Flat, recently authorised by the Main Highways Board. Mr Renner said 600 yards of metal were required for the Highway in this locality and 400 yards for general county requirements. It was decided to call tenders for the supply of this metal, to be delivered by rail at the railway stations, where it is required. Cr. W. H. Montgomery, chairman of the finance committee, reported that the credit balance at July 31 was £1213 12s 9d. The cost of the recent snow clearing in the county had been £9B 18s 2d, and the cost of letting out Lake Forsyth was £llß. The question of using a bulldozer for letting out the lake was discussed, and it was thought that either a bulldozer fitted with a scoop, or a tractor and carrier could be used to advantage instead of scoops and horses.
