DISTRICT FISHING REGULATIONS
PROPOSALS FOR NEW SEASON RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GAME SHOOTING The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society recently recommended the following local regulations for the coming fishing season:—(l) That the season for all rivers and Lake Ellesmere be October 1, 1943, to April 30, 1944, ificlusive; (2) that the season for Lakes Coleridge, Sheppard, Taylor, Katrine, and Sumner be October 1, 1943, to April 30, 1944, inclusive; (3> that the season for all other backcountry lakes be November 1, 1943, to April 30, 1944, inclusive; (4) that the closing date of the season for quinnat salmon (streams only) be May 15, 1944; (5) that in the back country lakes the minimum length of any trout taken or killed shall be 14 inches; (6) that in Lake Ellesmere and all rivers the minimum length of any trout taken or killed shal 1 be 11 inches. Fish committee members said the end of the season was fixed as the end of April, to ensure having fishing at Easter each year, and to meet the fly fisherman, who did not get sport until the fish were rising and feeding. Some members,' however, held that fish npe for spawning were taken at the end of the season, thus jeopardising future supplies. Game Laws The following recommendations will be sent to the- South Island council, for submission to the Department of Internal Affairs, in the hope of obtaining uniform game laws for the whole of the South Island:—(1) That an open season for game be observed from May 1, 1944, to June 30, 1944, both days Inclusive. In the event of the Department of. Internal Affairs insisting upon a restricted season for water fowl, that an open'season for game be observed from June-1 to June 30, 1944, both days inclusive; (2) that landowners and all persons at present entitled to take or Kill native and/or imported game without 1 a licence be obliged to purchase a licence; (3) that provided auniform game licence of not less than 25s is observed throughout the South Island, gaine licences to take or kill native, and/or imported game be regarded as a general licence throughout the South Island; (4) that the regulations governing the cool storage of game be amended, extending the present period of seven days to that of one month to licence holders only, who shall declare the birds, not exceeding 20 native game, which may lawfully be deposited by any licence holder.
