HYDE RAILWAY ACCIDENT
SITTINGS OF BOARD OF INQUIRY The board of inquiry which has been constituted under the Government Railways Act to investigate the circumstances of the derailment of the Cromwell-Duncdin passenger train near Hyde on June 4 has not yet commenced its public sittings. Certain preliminary investigations have been carried out, and on June 25 and 26 the technical members of the board visited Dunedin to inspect the damaged engine and rolling stock. They also inspected the track at the scene of the derailment. Public notification of the inspections was given, and counsel and other interested parties were afforded the opportunity of being present. Auvice has now beer, received that, as essentia] witnesses are still unable to attend because of injuries received in the accident, it is not expected that the public sittings oi the inquiry board will commence for some weeks. The Minister of Railways (the Hon. R. Semple) has granted the board an extension of time until September 13. The board is required to report tp the Minister by this date. Public notification will be given of the sittings of the board in ample time to permit the attendance as witnesses of those who wish to give evidence.
