"It might not be all that we asked for, but it might have been a lot worse,” ;aid Jr John Johnston, reporting on behalf of the dairying committee to the Southland provincial executive of the Farmers' Union on the subsidy granted by the Government to cover increased dairy farm and factory costs. Mr Johnston said he had met Mr John Dunlop. South Island member of the Dairy Board, and Mr W. Young, a membe of the Dairy Industry Council, on their return south, from the negotiations in Wellington. They had stated that the subsidy to cheese factories and suppliers would amount to 1.066 d per lb butter-fat. The first intimation had suggested that the increase would be equal to about gd per lb, but the extra factory allowance brought it to just mor6 than Id.
