U.S. PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION
♦ MR WENDELL WILLKIE’S VIEWS (Rec. 11 P.m.) WASHINGTON. Aug. 7 “Mr Wendell Wilikie has informed members of the Republican National Committee that he will be a candidate for the Presidential nomination in 1944 only if he is convinced that the party intends to support a liberal and constructive programme on both domestic and foreign issues and ‘old guard elements’ cease to exercise control of party policies,” says the “New York Herald-Tribune.” “Mr Wilikie has emphasised that he will not compromise his expressed views or principles or make political deals in attempts to placate isolationists and other groups within the party which may seek to forestall his nomination. “Mr Wilikie has expressed the opinion that the Republicans could succeed where the New Deal has failed in developing a tangible practical programme reflecting the new spirit of Liberalism surging throughout the world as the result of the war.”
