SUPPLIES OF GUMBOOTS
STATEMENT BY HON. D. G. SULLIVAN A reply to representations made b. r . the Kaikoura Co-operative Dairy Com pany, asking that supplies of gumboots be made available to dairy farmers, has been received from the Minister of Supply (the Hon. D. G Sullivan), through Mr E. P. Meachen M.P. "Unfortunately there has been no shipment to hand since the middle cf last year, and repeated efforts by the Government to secure a shipment from overseas have proved unsuccessful.’ stated the Minister, He said that he was in complete sympathy with workers who were compelled to follow wet occupations. He added that at the present 'time an application under lend-lease for the supply of gumboots was being considered in Washington, and if approved by the United States authorities the number of bools available would be sufficient to meet the immediate needs of necessitous case" In addition the possibility of manufacturing gumboots in New Zealand was being examined, continued the Minister Repairs were being executed by two firms in New Zealand, one of which was in Christchurch.
