HOUSE BADLY DAMAGED BY FIRE

Fire severely damaged a house occupied by Mr V. T. Goodman, at 1041 Colombo street, &t. Albans, shortly before 7 o’clock yesterday morning. The outbreak, the cause of which is unknown. originally occurred in the kitchen, and the whole building was soon ablaze. Mr Goodman and his three children were sleeping in the house at the time of the fire, and were helped to escape by neighbours before the arrival of the Christchurch Central Fire Brigade. Mr Goodman received a cut on the leg, and was treated as an out-patient at the Christchurch Public Hospital. Some delay was caused to trams travelling along Colombo street, which were unable to proceed until portable bridges were brought up to straddle fire-hoses lying across the rails.
