DRIFT TO THE NORTH

Sir, —To judge from the report of their discussion on the “Drift to the North,” some members of the Canterbury Progress League seem to think Canterbury is only Greater Christchurch and the North Island is Wellington. Here is an amused protest from “Beyant the Beyants” (as we say in Ireland). This “city-mindedness” is the real root of the problem, and so

obscures the real cure. A policy to draw population to a Greater Christchurch will only feed a Greater Wellington. Centrifugal force sucks to the largest centre. The cure is a well-sur-veyed plan to spread industry over the whole country and prevent the growth of too large cities. Smaller towns in both North and South Islands should receive a quota of new industries. This w ; 1 prove in the long run better economics. and, what is more important, better sociology.—Yours, etc.. A. H. ACHESON. Waimate, May 6. 1943.
