WHEAT

Sir,—The farmers are being asked to grow 350,000 acres of wheat for next harvest. We cannot keep on increasing our acreage of wheat, but we can grow enough foodstuffs to supply the whole of our country’s need. There are many reasons to advance, but soil fertility is perhaps the most important. What is required is that the farmers be asked to grow foodstuffs such as wheat, oats, peas, potatoes on cost and not just wheat and potatoes. We would then have a good rotation and a longer sowing and harvesting period in which to make the best use of our manpower, land, and machinery. The bottleneck that is holding up our wheat sowing programme is the available supply of fertiliser, which seems to be about a month behind with the delivery. I cannot understand what our Production Councils are up to to allow such a position to develop.—Yours, etc., T. E. PEARSON. Hororata, May 5, 1943,
