MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE REJECTED
GRAND JURY’S DECISION (P.A.) PALMERSTON N., May 5. The grand jury returned a no-bill in the case in the Supreme Court in which James Trevor Morgan, a labourer, aged 28, was charged with manslaughter. The indictment was a sequel to the death of a girl. Alice Takarua, at Motuiti, near Foxton, on January 24. When he was reviewing the evidence before the grand jury retired. Mr Justice Johnston said it was difficult to get a clear picture of what had happened. It was clear, however, that the girl got into the car Morgan was driving. She was sitting on the floor with her legs on the running board. Her reason for getting into the car was not clear Morgan drove the car away, and the next heard of the pair was when Morgan brought her back unconscious. She died soon afterwards. Medical evidence was to the effect that death was caused by head injuries, apparently a result of a fall from the car. and also that the girl had consumed a considerable amount of alcohol.
When the grand jury announced its decision, his Honour said that he, too, had found it difficult to find that there had been manslaughter.
