AMATEUR SPORT COUNCIL

ELECTION OF OFFICERS Officers were elected, and a credit balance of £25 Is 6d shown, at the first annnual meeting of the Canterbury Council of Amateur Sport, held in the Pioneer Sports Club rooms last evening. "This association," said Mr A. R. Blank, “which has been formed for only three months, has already justified its existence by saving English Park.” Officers elected were:—President, Mr E. V. Phillips; vice-president, Mr A. R. Blank; secretary. Miss D. Brown; treasurer, Mr E. R. Caygill; auditor, Mr L, L. Smith; committee, Mrs R. Lane, Misses E, M. Byme and G. S. Goldsmith, Messrs A. T. Bell, L. H. Hill, E. S. Velvin, J. E. Jones, A. E, Purse, C. Buckett, W. C. Aitken, L. A. Cade, W. J. Loader. Miss Brown, when she was nominated for the secretaryship, said that she accepted nomination, on condition that she should be relieved of the position if at any time she felt she could not carry out the duties required of her. "I have four secretaryships on my hands,” said Miss Brown, “Including one national one.” A vote of congratulation was passed by the meeting on the performances of the pupils of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, who had broken 10 records at their sports meeting held 'recently. Mr K. A. Muff, the council’s representative in the Internal Affairs Department, when invited by the chairman (Mr Phillips) to address the meeting, spoke on the subject of sport in the Air Training Corps. The boys would strongly support Air Training Corps hockey teams and harrier clubs, “especially," added Mr Muff, “if they were allowed to wear Air Force ’wings’ on their jerseys and singlets.’ By forming clubs inside the corps, Mr Muff contended, more boys would be induced to take up sports, but by doing so he would take players away from other clubs, which was to be avoided.
