HORSE SHOW AND GYMKHANA

BRIGHT DISPLAY AT SHOW GROUNDS The popularity of riding among the young folk was shown at the autumn, horse- show and gymkhana held at the Show Grounds on Saturday, and though several strong counter-attractions in baseball and cricket matches kept many , from attending, there was a good crowd present and an excellently-run programme provided first-class entertainment. Tiny tots from seven years old to good, strapping boys and girls, paraded a varied collection of ponies, cobs, hacks, and harness horses, and though the majority were breaking into winter coat they were a well-conditioned ibt and in each class there was a fair number of good quality horses. Though many of the young riders and horses had had little or no experience of the show ring, all appeared willing to learn, and the experience they received will be invaluable to them in future contests. • Som of the jumping was first' class, and the harness horse section made an attractive show. The show served a double purpose in that it netted a good amount which will be devoted to the funds of the. professions group Queen (Miss Free France) in the Miss Victory Campaign, and it served to keep alive the interest that many young New Zealanders take in horse-riding. In the latter case the real benefit will be seen at the different horse shows. Following are results:— Novice Pony (under 13.2).—D. Clarkson’s Tinkle Bell 1. Novice Pony (under 14.2).—L. P.
