STUD RAM FAIR

♦ GOOD SHEEP IN DEMAND

SOUTHDOWNS TO 240 GUINEAS

The annual stud ram fair, conducted by the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, was held on the Addington show grounds yesterday. Mila weather prevailed until well on in the afternoon, when a heavy rain began to fall. This possibly affected the competition as many visitors were unprepared for the rain and sought shelter, and the rain impaired the appearance of the sheep. The fair, as usual, was held in two sections. Tlie entry was up to the usual—--318 as* against 328 at last year s fair. The sheep included some excellent types of the various breeds, but if prices can be taken as an indication, there was a very wide spread in quality, from the best to the worst. Breeders were intent on securing the sheep which appealed or were suited to their flocks, and some exceptionally good prices were realised. There were more high figures paid, as a matter of fact, than for a number of fairs. Generally throughout the sale the better sheep sold well, after an uncertain opening, but in a number of breeds rams were sold at little better than flock prices The surprise was that more of these 15 guinea and under sheep were not secured in- (lock breeders. In some classes there was an excess entry, and passings, as a result, were heavy. The Lamb Breeds The Southdowns were in the widest request, and there was a good sale for all rams showing quality. It was one of the few breeds in which there was not an excess entry, comparatively few of the 99 offered failing to change hands either under the hammer or privately later. The Maheno breeder (H. J. Andrew) put up something of a record with his average prices. His two top rams made 240 guineas and 210 guineas, the first going to J. *and S. Madeley (Kaiapoi) and the other to A. S. Elworthy iTimaru). Other good rams made from 50 to 70 guineas, and averaged from 25 to 40 guineas, with a proportion less than 20 guineas. , „ , . There was a small entry of Ryelands, and a slow sale. The best ram made 27 guineas, secured by R. Reid (RiversBorder Leicesters numbered 20. and for the pick there was a free demand, the top-priced ram being sold by Lincoln College at 41 guineas. The Long-wools The long-wool breeds were all in over-supply. The section opened with the prize-winning Corriedales of the previous day, but for these sheep there was hesitant competition. Ideas of values became quickly established later, and although sales generally were below expectations for average sheep, there.was a keen demand for the better quality. Top price was 180 guineas, for a ram sold by the Hui Hui estate of the late H.T. Little, the buydr being James Reid (Darfield),' R. Dysart and Sons (Seddon) secured 150 guineas for a ram bought by D W. J. Gould (Mount Cass), and Lincoln College sold one for 100 guineas to D. Corcoran (Ashburton). English Leicesters were too numerous, although the entry was down to 56. Prices generally ranged from 10 to 20 guineas, with odd ones from 35 to 50 guineas, and the best, sold by W. J. Holland (Timaru), at 70 guineas. R. J. Low had the best Leicester record, four of his rams making from 35 guineas to 50 guineas. Only 16 of the 60 entered in the Romney Marsh section changed hands. There are few Romney studs in Canterbury, and the supply was excessive. The best of the sheep were exceptionally fine specimens, and there were some good tvnes from tho North Island. The estate of the late D. Robertson (Gore) registered good figures for his entries, the two tops making 100 guineas and 85 guineas. The following is a comparison of prices with those of last year:— 1942. 1943. Guineas. Guineas English Leicester 6 to 32J 10 to 70 Southdown ..
