WASTE RUBBER
Sir, —The appeal recently launched for the collection of 2000 tons of waste rubber requires some explanations if it is to be successful. The quantity is estimated to be two years supply for a reclaim factory. How has that estimate been arrived at and what quantity has been used since collection began last year? Why such a hurry to lay in long term stocks when manpower, petrol, tyres, and railway facilities are hard pressed to meet immediate requirements? What are the prospects of shipping space being available to export any surplus. Practically the only uses so far mentioned for reclaimed rubber are the manufacture of rubber heels and battery boxes; 2000 tons of waste would be sufficient to meet these requirements for many years. The least w„ can expect from our voluntary efforts is that they shall be turned to good account, and not just hurled back at us in taxation to meet the costs involved.—Yours, etc., H L H February 22, 1943.
