QUARRYING FOR SERPENTINE

DEPOSITS NEAR MOSSBURN (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Feb. 24. Quarrying will begin next week of serpentine deposits at Black Ridge, near Mossburn. This will establish a new industry for the South Island, and will be the first commercial exploitation of serpentine in the island. Deposits exist in several parts of the island, but the ones at Black Ridge are the most-readily accessible, being only about six miles from the nearest railway siding. Serpentine rock will be sent to the South Island fertiliser works at Burnside. Ravensbourne, and Hornby. The serpentine will be crushed and mixed with superphosphate in a ratio of one part of serpentine to three of phosphate.
