SUGAR RATIONING

Sir—Published on February 20, a Press Association message infers the Acting-Minister of Customs, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, would like a gullible public to believe that the breweries of New Zealand used comparatively very little sugar. The Minister would have us believe (1) that the brewing of beer takes 1 per cent, of the sugar imported into New Zealand, and (2) that this amount represents one and a half pounds annually a head of population. If so. then the breweries must use one and a half pounds, multiplied by the population of New Zealand (1,600,000). or 2,400,0001b of sugar. Further, this amount, 2,400,0001b, represents 1 per cent, of the New Zealand imports, which therefore amount to 100 times this amount, or 240,000,0001b of sugar. —Yours etc. WEAK MIND, WEAK BFER. February 22, 1943.
