FIRE AT OTAHUHU
PUBLIC HALL DESTROYED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 23.
One of Otahuhu’s oldest landmark*, the public hall, was destroyed by fire at 2.30 this morning. The building was burning fiercely when the brigade arrived: therefore, all efforts were concentrated on saving three shops fronting the main street and adjoining buildings. A good save was made. All books belonging to the Otahuhu Public Library, located in the hall, were destroyed. The property was owned by the Elite Furnishing Company. The loss is estimated at £3OOO. The hall was built 80 years, ago and the library was founded 63 years ago.
