FAT PIGS
Sir,—lt was with interest that I read the report of the fat pig market at Addington this week. I wonder at the lack of interest on the part of the buyer on a short market. This is so contradictory of conditions ruling two months ago, when baconers were bringing £7 9s and farmers; were being circularised recommending them, owing to the acute shortage of pigs in the Dominion, to carry as many pigs to bacon as possible. Prices at Bumside on Wednesday last were up to £5 Bs, with a keen sale. I am concerned for the pig producer, who, with his rising cost of food and transport, has to meet falling prices. The only way, as I see it, is price fixation; unless the so-called buyers at Addington give more equality in their consideration for the pig producer.—Yours, etc., NOT WORTH THE BOTHER. January 11, 1943.
