FLIES
Sir.—ln an article appearing in The Press” of January 8 regarding the fly menace, householders are told to see that food is properly screened. I would like to draw attention to the fact that in many of the shops of distributors under the zoning scheme bread is absolutely unprotected frpm flies. I know of one shop in which one can see flies swarming over the bread; and no doubt a large percentage of them come from manure heaps of the many market gardens situated in the neighbourhood. In fbesecircumstances it seems to be of little use householders being told to Protect this particular and important article of diet, which cannot be washed before using. There seem to me to be two remedies: (1) To institute a zoning system of direct delivery from the bakers to the public: or (2) to insist on distributing shopkeepers protecting the bread against Ai^Yours.^etc., January 11, 1943.
