RELEASE OF MEN FOR HARVEST
DISCUSSION BY PRODUCTION ' COMMITTEE • Applications had been made for the release of a number of men from camp for shearing, grubbing, and the cocksfoot harvest, Mr C. J. Marshall (chairman) reported to a meeting of the Banks Peninsula Primary Production Advisory Committee held at Duvauchelle. Men had also been released from Home Guard duty during the busy farming period, said Mr Marshall.
The Okain’s Bay cheese factory suppliers had also forwarded a petition for exemption from military duties of a motor mechanic in their district as they considered him essential and his medical grading was C2. The question was raised whether exemption should be recommended as men in this class might replace men in camp who could be released for overseas service. The petition will be sent to the central committee. It was decided to inquire if applications for men for release from military camps should be made direct to the military authorities by farmers in the district, as it was reported this had been done. It was considered that the committee should report on such cases. It was also decided to inquire if the committee was expected to report on fit single men in the district who had sine die exemptions. It was pointed out that these exemptions were granted before the committee came into being, and if the committee was to submit a report on them, it would be necessary to have a list of such men supplied. The release of two men to do seasonal farm work was approved, and reports by members of the committee on 16 men called up in the recent ballot were also approved.
