RECORD LAMBING PERCENTAGE
ESTIMATE 91.43 PER CENT.
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, January 11. For the first time in the history of the Dominion, lambing percentages have exceeded 90 per cent, for three years in succession, last season s esli* mate of 91.43 being the highest yet recorded. The estimate prepared by the Department of Agriculture is not as accurate as in previous years, the number of breeding ewes being based on the figures for 1941, as none was available for last year. South Island returns have been consistently higher than those for the North Island for the last five years, and this year the southern percentage (93 94) is the highest on record. The North Island estimate (89.95) is also high. The actual number of lambs tailed during the year is not available, but the Dominion total is estimated at 18,314,179, which is about 20,000 fewer lambs than in 1941. The estimate for the North Island is 10,134,505. The .number of breeding ewes in the Dominion has increased from 19,332,077 in 1937 to 20.030,933 in 1941 and the lambing percentage has risen from 88.71 to 91.43.
