ONEKAKA MINING DISPUTE

JUDGMENT AGAINST

INSPECTOR

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 11. Judgment for the respondents against the inspector of mines at Reefton in the Onekaka mining dispute was delivered by the Chief Justice (the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers) in the Supreme Court to-day. The respondents were the Onekaka Iron and Steel Company, Ltd. (in liquidation), Golden Bay Proprietary Company, Ltd., and Pacific Steel, Ltd. Dismissal of the appeal did not mean that the respondents were necessarily entitled to compensation in respect of any of the privileges which were liable to forfeiture in March, 1938, but it meant that they were entitled to have their claim heard by the Compensation Court, his Honour said, The claimants would have to show there that the privileges were of value at the time, and in the process of. the inquiry the ability of Pacific Steel, Ltd., to purchase and pay for the Onekaka assets and develop the industry would have to be established. It was not for the Supreme Court to say which party was entitled to claim and receive any compensation due.
