DIPLOMA NIGHT

“I congratulate you on having taken up kindergarten work, which is interesting, valuable, and fascinating, and I congratulate you on having completed your training and gained your diplomas,” said Dr. I. L. G. Sutherland addressing five kindergarten student teachers who, with their friends and relatives, were entertained at the Jcllicoe Hall last night by the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association, and presented with the diplomas they had gained recently. Dr. Sutherland said that the kindergarten teachers were making a useful contribution to the country in supplementing the influences of home life and helping in the social development of very young children. The kindergarten was a miniature democracy, where children were taught to give and take. This training in early years was of supreme importance in providing for happy and healthy adult living. It was announced by Miss R. Wilkie, principal of kindergartens, that three new kindergartens had been opened during the year, bringing the total in the city and suburbs to 11, Mrs H. T. J. Thacker, president of the association, presided and presented diplomas to Misses Margaret Ell, Eva Millen, Rachel Rudkin, Doris Sutherland. and Joy White. Special prizes for excellence in daily marking were awarded to Miss Rudkin (seniors) and Miss Betty Blake (juniors), for best original story, illustrated by the writer, to Mrs R. Tracey and Miss M. Keltic and for best posters (assistants) to Miss Hazel Donald and Mrs George Francis. A concert programme was presented by Miss G. Hughes, Miss Joy Hartley, and other members of the association's staff, and a short play was presented by Mcsdamcs J. E. Dcnford, H. Toncycliff, and D. Munro.
