Out of Action Enrich, who finished last in the Metropolitan Handicap, was very lame later, and is to be given a spell.

A Valuable Gift Frank Manning, Jim., who trains Colonus for Mi Mcnck, is most appreciative of a generous gesture by Mr Menck. In 1939 Mr Menck purchased the stables now occupied by Manning, and leased them to his trainer. Some time ago Mr Menck told Manning that if he won the Melbourne Cup for him he would make a present of the stables to him. Colonua having won tire Melbourne Cup, Mr Menck is now arranging for the transfer to Manning of the title to the property, which is valued at £3OOO.

Melbourne Cup Day The Melbourne Cup crowd is usually about the 100,000 mark. This year, owing to the wet weather the attendance was only 35,000. It was one of the smallest gatherings for the Cup in the memory of most people. Important Successes C. Thomson, trainer of live Oaks winner, Alethea, has been training only a comparatively short while, and his team has never contained an outstanding horse, but lie lias done well, particularly this season. Within die space of four months lie has won a Grand National Hurdle Race (Renascor) and a New Zealand Oaks. A Profitable Deal A London building contractor, Mr A. E Allnatt, who speculated £115,000 in purchasing the whole of the late Lord Glancly's racing and stud interests, made a profit of about £50,0(8) upon the resale. A three-day resale realised £165,448, including 22.000 guineas for the sire Colombo and 17,000 guineas for the six-year-old brood mare Olein, by Colombo, from Grand Peace This is equal to the record bid for the mare Straltlace in 1925. Sixteen of Mr Allnatl's horses realised four figures, including 5700 guineas for Grand Peace.

Royal Lancer Royal Lancer won the New Zealand Cup under 8-11 and has received D;l2 in the Dunedin Cup. The Joker was fourth with 7-2 i, unci won the Metropolitan with 7-8, and Royal Lancer 9-11 was third, writes "Sentinel." In the Dunedin Cup The Joker 8-4 meets Royal Lancer on half a pound worse terms titan in the New Zealand Cup. and on 111b worse terms than in the Metropolitan. The fie u res suggest that tile top-weight is favourably handicapped, althougn allotted a big burden.

TROTTING NOTES

Answer to Correspondent Information. Christchurch. Harold Logan, by Logan Pointer—lvy Cole, bred bv J. J. Coffev. Springfield, was foaled in 1922

Unhoppled Trotters In the Trentham Handicap, to be decided at the Wellington Trotting Club's meeting next week, only eight horses have been nominated and the entries include Lady Scott and Mcrvyn Derby, winners at last month’s meeting at Addington and another In Within, whose running in tire Dominion Handicap was good enough to suggest that she will not be long off the winning list The field outside the throe horses mentioned is not strong, for Jimmy Drusus, Timworthy. Reception, and Mall Jong have not in their recent efforts shown tlie solidity and steadiness of gait that makes a high-grade trotter The track at Trentham is not suited to lightharness racing and owners in not nominating theii horses may have taken this into consideration. Te Kaliu will he racing over his favourite distance of a mile and a half, and his style of trotting may be suited to a track like Trentham Improvers

The Suburban Handicap, a 2min 53sec class mile and a quarter race, may provide the best race of the day at the Wellington meeting next week, for engaged are several horses that have shown gradual improvement in the last few month; and look like going on to better things Great News. Tcnpennybit, Lizzie Woods, Gold Flight. Fragment, and Nightbeam are all usolul pacers and capable ol improving a good deal on their assessments A Select Field

If the 11.horses nominated for the Electric Handicap. 2min 47soc class, at Wellington go to the post there should be a race of outstanding interest, tor all engaged have performed with credit at Addington Coquette and Shadow Maid have proved themselves over all distances and with Pacing Power will start from the limit. Only 12 yards behind will be Duskv Sound. Happy Man, Oui Peggy, Hardy Oak, and the cvcr-eonsistcnt Bayard. It is a race of possibilities.
