CARGO STEAMER STRANDED
KAIWARRA AGROUND ON MOTUNAU BEACH
The Union Steam Ship Company’s cargo steamer Kaiwarra went ashore on the beach at Motunau, North Canterbury, about midnight on Thursday night or early yesterday morning. Heavy rain was reported on the east coast on Thursday, visibility being very poor.
The Kaiwarra was built by J. Blumer and Company at Sunderland in 1919. She is a steel steamer of 3051 tons gross, and the principal dimensions are: Length, 331.3 feet; breadth, 46.8 feet; depth, 23.2 feet. Late last evening the Kaiwarra was still aground 300 yards from the shore, about two miles north of Motunau Island, and directly opposite the Motunau station. At high tide yesterday efforts were made to set the Kaiwarra afloat, and she shifted about a length, but again went aground. It was hoped to refloat the Kaiwarra at high tide early this morning.
