DEMOBILISATION PROBLEMS
MINISTER AGAINST KEEPING YOUNG MEN IN CAMP
"To keep men in camp and under military discipline, even of a somewhat relaxed type, after the military necessity for doing so had passed, would probably prove to be a psychological blunder,” the Minister of Education (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) informed the board of governors of the Christchurch Technical College last evening. The Rehabilitation Board had, in particular, he added, considered the proposal, in connexion with demobilisation. and had expressed very strong and definite views against it.
This matter had been advocated by the college governors in a resolution which was forwarded to the Minister in September. "If men are to be allowed to run loose when peace is declared,” commented the chairman tMr T. W. West). “I can see chaos and trouble ahead. The trainin that we suggested for these young men is not only necessary, but w'ould -be of distinct value to them.” .
