SPORTING

TURF GOSSIP

Cerne Abbas The New Zealar t Cup winner Cerne Abbas, died recently after foaling. Lame Horses Boloyna was lame after the New Zealand Cup and is to be given a long spell. Boulder Dam was also lame after the Derby. His trouble is shoulder soreness, thought to be due to galloping on hard tracks in Hawke’s Bay. Grilse suffered a leg injury on the journey home from Wellington last month and this again came against her last week, causing her withdrawal from the Stewards' Handicap. She was taken out of the New Zealand Oaks yesterday. Don Quex came south with G. New's team, but as he was suffering from the after-effects of being galloped on at Otaki, it was not possible to race him in the New Zealand Cup, and he was also taken out of the Metropolitan Handicap. Up to Standard

Royal Lancer’s 8-11 is the third highest weight carried to victory in the New Zealand Cup. Nightmarch won with 9-6 in 3min 26 l-ssec, Count Cavour with 8-13 in 3min 26 l-ssec, and Royal Lancer with 8-11 in 3min 23 3-ssec. Lord Nuffleld’s 9-6 in Imin Usee in the Stewards’ Handicap ranks next to Arrowsmith's 9-11 in Imin 12sec. Glentruin also won with 9-6, but she occupied Imin 12 4-ssec. These figures indicate that Saturday’s winners were responsible for performances a long way above the average. Mounting Up

Royal Lancer in all has started 43 times, has won 14 races, and been placed on 24 occasions, his stake money amounting to £4055, and two cups valued at £225. An Outstanding Family

Francolin, dam of Royal Flight, showed speed as a youngster. She ran second to Speed Light at Wanganui in her first start as a two-year-old. Later she won two juvenile events at Invercargill and the Russlcy Plate at Riccarton, says the Southland "Times." Her early promise was not fulfilled at three years, but as a four-year-old she won three sprints at successive starts at Wingatui and Tapanui. That she has been capable of reproducing that brilliance of speed in her own sons and daughters has been strikingly demonstrated. Her first foal, Niahtwings (by Nightmarch), won several pood races, but her second, a colt foai by Lord Warden, died, She missed the following year, in 1934, but foaled Ortyx in 1935. Then in succeeding years she foaled Dark Flight, Gold Flight, Gay Flight (Nigger Minstrel). Winning Flight, and Royal Flight, • Gay Flight raced only once—in ‘ue McLean Stakes two seasons ago.

A colt foal to Salmagundi and a foal to Man’s Pal are the latest '-f the progeny of Francolin. She was bred by Mr I. G. Duncan and is now 16 years old. She is by Paper Money—Philomela, by Bezonian—Philomel, by Birkenhead— Arethusa. by Dreadnought—Dryad, by St. Legcr—Wood Nymph, by Musket —Sylvia, by Fisherman—Juliet, by Touchstone. Successful Rider

W. F. Ellis, rider of Royal Lancer In the New Zealand Cup on Saturday, has had a good season in big events. His best performances this season have been on the winners of the Winter Cup (Bashful Lady), live McLean Stakes (Invulnerable), the New Zealand Cup (Royal Lancer), the Ranglora Cup (All Night), and the Ranfurly Handicap (Royal Lancer). Since January 1 his winning rides include the winners of the Wyndham Cup (Southern Sail), the Invercargill Cup (Spanish Lad), the Dunedin Cup (Southern Sail), the Champion Hack Handicap at Riverton (Bashful Lady), the Easter Handicap at Riverton (Royal Lancer), and the winners previously mentioned. Ho has ridden 13 winners this season, and a total of 95 winners In six seasons of riding. A Good Record Lord Nuffield, winner of the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, is now eight years old. He began racing as a two-vear-okl, but he was unplaced in three starts. At three years he began a record which has reaped stakes to the value of £3215. In all he has been started 60 times tor 16 firsts and 14 mlnoi placings.

TROTTING NOTES

Disappointing Bill B„ imported from America, disappointed many followers of trotting by his racing in Canterbury, but apparently he is still regarded as a winning possibility in races run in Auckland He is set to give away 24 yards in the Auckland Cup Trial on Saturday to a field of useful pacers. Bill B. is now 10 years old and in being set to give a start to brilliant young pacers like Pacing Power he is being asked a big question. Bill B. was not raced last season. Pacing Power, now a four-ycar-old, won nearly £ISOO, and is on the improve. Shadow Son

Shadow Son. a seven-year-old gelding bv Red Shadow from Great Muricata, has done a good deal of racing, but he appears to be now striking form. He proved expensive to his connexions last year, but in his first three starts this season he won a race and was twice third. Shadow Son has breeding to recommend but at his age he is hardly likely to improve a great deal.

A Consistent Pacer When Kenworthy was trained in Canterbury by F. C. Walker he proved himself one of the most consistent pacers over all distances and his second in the New Zealand Cup last year to Josedale Grattan showed him a rare stayer, Kenworthy will race at the Soutli Auckland Club's meeting on Saturday, but may find classes more suited to his ability at Epsom later in the month. Kenworthy has not been over-raced since leaving Qanterhury and, fresh and well, may again show his true form. Malden Pacers and Trotters

The Patriotic Sports Meeting to be held at Sefton on December 12 will be marked by the reappearance of an old favourite In Harold Logan, who will give an exhibition of pacing over half a mile. This great racehorse of a few years back has not been idle since he last raced, and he is in order to show some of his oldtime brilliance. Owners of maiden horses will be afforded the chance to give their maiden pacers and trotters a run in public and over the different distances, 2min 30sec, 3min 49sec, 3min 50scc, and 4min 54sec class horses will be in evidence.
