NEW MATERNITY HOSPITAL
♦- — REBUILDING ST. HELENS
SEVERAL SITES BEING CONSIDERED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, December 2. If a suitable site is purchased, the new St. Helens Maternity Hospital will be built in Christchurch without delay. Several sites as alternatives to the St. Andrew’s Manse are under consideration, and the architecture and accommodation of the new hospital will depend on the land yet to be purchased by the Health Department. An agreement has been made that the Health Department will release the church manse property at the corner of Tuam street and Hagley avenue for use by the North Canterbury Hospital Board, and several sites in the city have been inspected for the site of the new maternity hospital, to replace the long-standing building in Durham street, Sydenham. No decision has yet been made.
The site in Hagley avenue will be used for hospital extensions, the Hospital Board now being circumscribed in its building activities on the river front area. Plans for an imposing hospital at the corner of Tuam street and Hagley avenue were prepared, but they will now be abandoned, as the type of accommodation and the facilities to he provided in the new hospital will be determined by the nature of the site.
