THE FREEZING INDUSTRY
MORE MEN NEEDED
WAR CABINET’S PLAN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Dec. 2. The War Cabinet has considered the provision of further labour for the freezing industry, and in a statement to-day the Minister of Industrial Manpower (the Hon. A. McLagan) said that in addition to releasing men from the Army arrangements were now to be made to defer temporarily the mobilisation of suitable men who were available for posting to camp, so that their services could be obtained for the freezing industry. "During the next few weeks.” he added, "manpower officers will be interviewing men who have been called up for military service and have not yet entered camp, with a view to selecting sufficient suitable men to meet the serious shortage of labour that faces the industry. Both grade 1 and grade 2 men will be available for selection. Preference is to be given to grade 2 men, but no person will be directed if he is held under appeal for employment in his present occupation.
“The provision of adequate labour for the freezing industry is regarded by the War Cabinet as of great importance,” said the Minister. "Unless stock is killed when it is ready, not only will we be unable to supply the meat necessary for Great Britain and our allies, but'the whole of our farming economy will be prejudiced.”
