Flays Presented by Amateurs. —Four one-act plays were presented in the Leeston Town Hall by the Leeston Drama Circle, under the auspices of the Canterbury University College Extension Department, the tutor being Mr G. A. Worthington. The plays were well staged and provided good entertainment. Proceeds will be given to patriotic funds. Commission in Canada.—Mr and Mss G. Thomson (Waiau) have been advised that their son, Ronald, an old boy of the Waiau School, has received his commission in Canada and has been appointed an instructor. He is 19 years of age. Patriotic Quota Exceeded.—Hastings closed its eight weeks’ patriotic queen carnival on Saturday night, when it was announced that the Hastings zone had raised more than £28,000 for the 1942-43 patriotic appeal. The zone quota is £20,000. There were four queens, representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Nursing Services.
