RACE-DAY TRAMS
Sir,—Can the representative of the Tramway Board explain why there is never a shortage of “rolling stock” or staff on race days?— Yours, etc., STRAP-HANGER. November 26, 1942, [A representative of the Tramways Board said that by working long hours and using old rolling stock it was possible to provide a special service occasionally. The rolling stock, however, would not stand up to continuous use, day after day, and the men were only flesh and blood. Most of them would be working 14 or 15 hours. They did not mind that occasionally, but they could not be expected to do it every day. By charging increased fares the board was able to meet the cost of an occasional special effort.]
