LANDING COAL AT AKAROA

PROPOSAL CONSIDERED tB IMPRACTICABLE V, jjf The landing of coal at Onawe K Duvauchelle, and on other wharves ■*< l the county was discussed at a meeting of the Akaroa County Council. As tne wharves were not built to carry lorries, it was considered that the landing ol coal by the boat service was not practicable, and that to strengthen tne wharves would be a costly undertaking. The County Clerk (Mr A. G. Foreman) stated that Mr J. J. B. Connor, of the Transport Department, Christchurch. had inquired if the wharves could be made usable fur loading coal. The council considered coal should be transported from Little River, as it went there direct from the West Coast, and it would not be a good policy to load coal and other heavy goods at Akaroa as this would involve haulage just as long as from Little River. The council decided to post notices on county wharves stating that they must not be used for lorry or other vehicular traffic, and those using wharves for this purpose would do SO at their own risk.
