Mr G. H. McLean, railwa- district traffic manager at Christchurch, will return today from a visit of inspection on the West Coast. Mr V. Raines, No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, will be in Christchurch on transport business until Friday. Mr W. H. Mackintosh, of VVoodburn, Fairnc, has been re-elected unopposed as the representative of the Crown tenants on the Canterbury Land Board. Lieutenant Graeme Burns, son of the late Mr A. M. Burns, formerly manager of the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd., who is a prisoner of war in Italy, has sent the following message to a Christchurch resident: “Have been a prisoner almost six months. Am keeping well and living in a camp with about 100 New Zealand officers. Had a hard, cold winter, but spring is here now and things have settled down. Boredom is our worst enemy.” Appreciation of the excellent work accomplished among convalescent soldiers at Hanmor Springs by the Rev. I. B. Wilson the Presbyterian minister there, was expressed at last evening’s meeting of the Christchurch executive of the Returned Services’ Association. It was stated that Mr Wilson had successfully organised cinema entertainments for the men, and in other ways had been of the greatest assistance to them. “We always received reasonable consideration from the Hon. H. T. Armstrong. who carried out his job to the best of his ability. The country is the poorer by his passing," said the Waimatc County Chairman (Mr J. Bitchoncr) at a meeting of the council yesterday. The council carried a motion of condolence with relatives. It was decided at last evening's meeting of the Christchurch executive of the Returned Services’ Association that the association's gold medal should be presented to the Hon, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes at a garden party to bo held at Elmwood on December 12. Members of the Christchurch executive of the Returned Services' Association stood in silence to the memory of the following deceased members at their meeting last evening: Dr. W. H. Simp.son, Messrs W. B. Cruickshank, A. Cossar, S. J. Quick, and F. A. Roche. The Timaru Borough Council last evening passed a resolution to convey best wishes and seasonal greetings to Brigadier L. M. Tnglis and Timaru soldiers in the Middle East.
