BOOK, OF THE DAY MALAYA-BURMA Retreat in the East. By O. D. Gallagher. George G. Harrap and Co. 190 pp. (8/6 net.) ‘‘Daily Express” war correspondent in Malaya and Burma, Mr Gallagher saw the Prince of Wales and the Repulse sunk; saw impregnable Singapore taken in rear and overwhelmed: saw the desperate diversion that saved Hutton’s army on the Sittang; saw the, chaos in Rangoon,, and its. funeral j tower of fire and smoke; saw ’ the! miraculous work of the American | Volunteer Group and the R.A.F., the few who could defy a horde but not defeat it. Want of men, weapons, and machines: this is part of Mr Gallagher’s story, but not the worst part. The worst describes muddle and indecision in the civil administration of Singapore and Rangoon; the futilities of the •Tuan Bosar and the Burra Sahib: the folly that gave over the Burmese ;to Japanese propaganda; the crime that left ships full of war materials unloaded for weeks. The best describes the endurance and courage of overtaxed troops and airmen, whose achievement, against hopeless odds, surely promises, that ‘‘the bloody triumph of Japanese arms will be brief.’’ AT A GLANCE Russian Poets Mr Gerard Shelley’s translations of Modem Poems from Russia (Allen and Unwin. 93 pp. 6/- net) are extremely good reading. Their range is wide: from the revolutionary fury of Blok's ‘‘Teh Twelve”’to the eternal, resolving earth-love of Ycsienin. Two “Acme-, isfs/.’ Gumllov, and Anna Akhmatova, ■the Symbolists, Biely. and Sologub, Pasternak, and Karrienski are other poets represented. Jolly ’Ard Kay Grant’s verses, It’s ’Ard to Stay Clean in the Country (Angus and Robertson, 45 pp; 2/-), are as trim and amusing as her two earlier collections, on the ’ardships of the suburbs and the city in war time. Pamphlets In .Bomber Command Continues (His Majesty’s Stationery Office: Vd net), the rising offensive against Germany, between July 1941 and June 1942, is officially reviewed. The New Zealand Cooperative Publishing Society Ltd. issues Fascist Japan: Ally of Hitler, jointly written by Australian and New Zealand researchers, and Dr. W. B. Sutch’s Workers and the War Effort, a plea for ‘‘worker collaboration” in the direction of industry.—Through the Cooperative Bookshop. • Last week 81 towns flew their National Savings flags as having attained their National Savings quotas. Following so closely on the Liberty Loan campaign, says a statement issued by the Post and Telegraph Department, this is regarded as a satisfactory result.
