X CIJP_DAY FIELDS AND PROSPECTS CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB’S MEETING The Canterbury Jockey Club should have one of the most successful New Zealand Cup days at Rlccarton to-day In the history of the club. The fields are not only all well filled, but contain many of the best horses of all grades in commission in-the Dominion. The course is in excellent order, and with yesterday's drying wind, the going should be exceptionally fast without t ring unreasonably hard. There are 20 acceptors for the New Zealand Cup, and all are expected to face the starter. Battledress, the top-weight, has not a big impost for such a good horse, but his final gallop on Thursday was not very encouraging. In any case, he has hardly had the preparation for a two mile race given to most of his opponents. Rakanui was in front nearing the post in last year's race, and is considered to be a more solid candidate this time. He has been staying on better than previously, and if kept in restraint during the early and middle stages, he will bo found finishing on. Gladynev has every credential to be favourite, as, apart from his close second placing last year, he showed his present order by his race at Otaki last week and his gallop this week. He will be bracketed wtth Don Quex, a decided light-weight possibility, so the bracket is certain to be first choice, at least on the place machine. Royal Lancer is an Interesting candidate, as his races have been few and far between because of recurring lameness. His trainer has had an anxious time getting him to the post fit and Well on this occasion. and a win for him would be popularly received, especially in the' Southland area. Yogi has been a useful performer, but does not appeal as a ; two-mller, and the same opinion-Is attached to.Botoyna, Piastre won the Auckland. Cup last Boxing Day, but has done little since. He is said to require a soft track' but before going to Ellerslie he wdii over a mile and a quarter at Otaki in 2min 4sec. Don’t Forget is more solid than he was 12 months ago, but although he Is likely to be prominent for a good way, the last furlong will trouble him. Of the remainder. Southern Sail, Eulogist, and The Joker may shape the best. High-Class Field The Stewards’ Handicap has attracted a high-class field, and the issue undoubtedly looks open. Bashful Lady, winner of the Winter Cup, and Scottish Dale, winner of the Great Easter Handicap, have proved themselves speedy and solid marcs, and the clash between them will be one of the day’s features. Lord Nuffield has not been over-weighted for a horse of his quality, but is now in his eighth year. The Champ will carry considerable North Island support,- and Poutatau, Pay Roll, and Palora are other visitors with some impressive, performances to their credit. Hearth gallppgd well onThursday, and in her present order will have to be seriously considered. Monetary, who ran second to Not Out in last year’s race, may not be advanced enough on this occasion. Among the lightweights. Straight Bat makes strong aopeal, while the stablermates, Grilse and John Gay, will each carry confident support. The contest for the New Zealand Derby promises to be the most spectcaular for many years. Some high-class horses are engaged, Including Boulder Dam, Representative, Nizam. Dominate, Botany, Pil--1 id. Lord Advocate, and Foxhavcn, while King Herod and Rink cannot be left out of calculations. Boulder Darfi showed signs of lameness before galloping on Thursday, but the trouble was not considered serious. There will be some speedy yougsters in the Welcome Stakes. Including winners in Islam, Supercharged, Spa Spi, and Sohcy, and these alone should provide a close tussle.
