GOODS FOR CHRISTCHURCH CONSIGNEES
EXTRA LABOUR CALLED TO UNLOAD 800 TRUCKS The amount of goods standing under load for Christchurch consignees is as large as it has been for about 12 months. At one stage this week about 800 trucks were in the railway yards, and considerable additional labour has been employed to deal with the situation. Giving this information yesterday, Mr G. H. McLean, district railway traffic manager, said that 155 trucks had been dealt with on Wednesday, and the A and D sheds would be opened on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday for delivery of goods to consignees.
The department, he said, had nad to employ about 55 extra hands, including 23 university students, to help with the unloading of the trucks. Consignees were at the same time being urged to take delivery promptly when goods were available to them to relieve congestion. The aim was to have the trucks, for which there was a regular demand, though it was not yet the busy season, freed as quickly as possible, and it was hoped that they would be cleared next week.
