AUCKLAND, November 25. New Zealand financial institutions and business firms have written off many thousands of pounds on account of assets in the Far East believed to have been seized by the Japanese. The first news to reach the Dominion concerning the currency position in Shanghai and indicating that all sterling and dollar funds were sent to banks outside China just before Japan entered the war against Britain and America last December, has been received in Auckland from the representative of a leading financial house in a letter from Shanghai through Chungking. Most of the larger concerns had sterling and American dollar accounts with British and American banks, and it is now revealed that these balances, amounting to many thousands, are held in London and New York, apparently until after the war, when adjustments will be possible. It is thus clear that the replacement of local currency by the Japanese does not affect sterling and dollar balances which were removed before the Japanese could seize them. COMPANY NEWS Consolidated Brick, Ltd.—The directors of Consolidated Brick, Ltd., have declared an interim dividend of U per cent., payable on December J7.—(P.A.)
