CONTRACTS TO GROW WHEAT

ACREAGE PROMISED SO FAR ABOUT 42,000 “Wheat contracts for 19(J3 are now coming to hand from all wheatgrowing areas in New Zealand, and the total received at the Wheat Committ;e’s office to date represents 41,838 acres,” said the Wheat and Flour Controller (Mr R. McPherson) yesterday. He emphasised that this, however, represented only a part of the contracts signed already, as every broker would have a number on hand not yet sent in to the office for entering. For the present stage, he said, the progress indicated was quite satisfactory. Mr McPherson said that about 15,000 pamphlets urging farmers to support the campaign for 350,000 acres were now being issued by the National Council of Primary Production in co-operation with the Wheat Committee and United Wheatgrowers, Ltd. The pamphlets would be distributed by brokers, millers, district production councils and their sub-commit-tees, threshing mill owners and others. The pamphlets emphasise that the growers’ contracts are in the nature of a pledge, and that an area of 350,000 acres will be needed to feed New Zealand and the fighting men protecting the Dominion.
