SUGAR STOCKS IN DOMINION
v NO HUGE RESERVES ” STATEMENT BY MINISTER OP SUPPLY (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 25. Since the announcement of the reinstatement of , the 12oz ration of sugar a coupon and that an additional allowance of 31b a person would be made in December for jam-making, it I. ad been suggested by certain persons that huge reserves of sugar were being held in New Zealand, said the Minister of Supply (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan). This was entirely incorrect. The sugar stock position had given considerable anxiety in recent months, and every endeavour had been made to build up stocks to meet normal requirements. With restricted shipping facilities this policy was sound and prudent. It allowed a reasonable margin of safety, and permitted a satisfactory dispersal of stocks throughout the Dominion. Special reserves held in addition to normal requirements would provide only three weeks’ supply on the present ration basis. Mr Sullivan again said he hoped to be able to announce before the end of the year that a further supply for jammaking would be made available during the fruit season. This would depend on shipping.
