DRESSING OF SHOP WINDOWS

TIMARU MAYOR’S REQUEST A suggestion from the Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S. Hanan) that the empty shop windows in Timaru be dressed by manufacturers and others for the holidays, was received by the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last evening. “This would go a long way to give visitors a better impression of our town,” said the > Mayor. Members expressed the view that the matter was not one for the Chamber of Commerce, but rather one for private enterprise. “This is not a time for dressing up to receive visitors,” said Mr J. M. Jenkins, in moving that the letter be received. He added that staffs were too busy and stocks would not permit such displays to be made. The letter was received. The Chamber instructed the publicity and progress committee to prepare a report on the decentralisation of industry. An application for a subscription to the South Canterbury Health Camp was declined.
