N.Z. SEED FOR BRITAIN
IMPORT MAY BE BANNED RAPE, RYEGRASS, AND CLOVER (P.A.) WELLINGTON, November 25. The New Zealand Government had recently been advised by the British Government that import licences for the 1942-43 crop of New Zealand rape seed might not be available, the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. J. G. Barclay) said to-night. The British Government had also stated that it might not allow the importation of ryegrass and red clover seed and that white clover seed might be banned in the following season. The serious effect such a prohibition would have on New Zealand farmers who had undertaken the production of these seeds for Britain had been pointed out, Mr Barclay said, and the matter was still under negotiation. In the meantime, further contracts for the production of seed should be made with caution until the Government could make a definite announcement.
